How Easy Is It For You To Dig Up A Palm Tree?

How Easy Is It For You To Dig Up A Palm Tree If a palm tree isn’t doing well in a specific location, or if you need space for a new building or landscaping, or you have someone who wants that particular palm tree; you might have to remove it and dig it up.

Therein lays the big challenges of correctly doing so for a successful result.

That includes having the knowledge and experience; as well as the correct equipment, handling,
transportation, replanting procedures and after-care; together with all the details that comes from
decades of experience, etc.

Mostly A Specialist Operation:

Which means the specialist operation of correctly digging up a palm tree will then make it easier to
transport, replant and boost the palm’s chance for survival and speedy establishment in it new position.

And generally this is because palms generate new roots towards the plant’s base and only require a
relatively modest root mass to transplant.

An Eight Step Process:

So, from experience, the suggested are the general eight steps to take could be the following:

1. Very important, before you begin digging, remember call the appropriate utility companies to make
sure that there were no underground wires or pipes, etc.

2. A day before you are to carefully dig up a palm tree, water the soil surrounding it slowly and deeply.
Wet soil can be dug more easily without damaging the palm’s root system.

3. So as you avoid damaging a palm tree, it&’s best to carefully remove about a third of the oldest
fronds before you start as it avoids water stress and makes the palm easier to handle during
transplanting. Making sure you protect the ‘crown’ or the newest fronds.

4. And if you want to make working with a palm easier and reduce the risk of accidentally damaging
the foliage, tie back the remaining fronds. This can be done once it’s dug up.

5. With regards to the root ball, dig a circle it around palm tree, cutting through the soil and roots
with a sharp spade or appropriate equipment. This circle can be 30-60cm (12-24 inches) from the
diameter of the trunk depending on type/size of palm you have, and the root ball of the palm to be
dug down to a depth of at least 15-30cm below the roots.

6. You can then either immediately replant the palm into a new, drilled hole or wrap the root mass in
burlap (or similar) to retain soil moisture for correct transportation and storage. To do this
wrapping, tilt the palm to one side, then tuck a part of rolled-up burlap under roots, then lean the
palm to the opposite side, and unroll the burlap. Burlap’s rims can also be used to help pull the
roots from the hole.

7. The storage condition for a palm is that it should be kept in a cool shady area away from drying
winds, and its root mass should be moistened regularly until it can be planted in its new location.

8. And if you’re not sure how to do this correctly or you want someone else do it for you, or you may
want further details on all this, it is advised that you seek a professional contractor to do this
specialist work for you.
